Education
Senator Schumer believes that a high quality and affordable education is the ticket to prosperity. That is why he has fought to make college tuition affordable for any family that wants to send their kids to college. In 2001, Senator Schumer helped write the original legislation making up to $4,000 in college tuition tax deductible for the first time in history. This year, Senator Schumer succeeded in passing a $2,500 annual college tuition tax credit on the economic stimulus package to give middle-class families more resources to send their kids to college. The tax credit will allow parents to deduct $2,500 per child from their final federal tax bill for each year their kids attend college. He is also working to consolidate the various higher education tax incentives into this new credit to make the tax code simpler for middle-class families.
